Fishing

During the Summer months The Heights is let as a holiday cottage with excellent Brown Trout fishing on Lochan Fada, Lochan Gharbaig and numerous other small hill lochs.

Lochan Fada and several of the smaller lochs can be approached by car to within a 45 minutes/1 hour walk from further along the same access track that serves The Heights. From the top of this same track the nearest small lochan is reachable after a 30 minute walk. All fishing is from the bank.

The quality of this wild trout fishing can be first class and indeed Donald John Macleod has personally accounted for fish up to 5¾ lbs and bigger fish have been caught in the past. The average size of fish for the two main lochs is around 10-12ozs and it is certainly not uncommon to catch fish of 2 lbs or more.

The smaller lochans tend to produce fish up to 6-8 oz however fish of 12 oz - 1lb can be caught occasionally. They fight extremely well on light tackle, are pink fleshed and eat very well!

In addition to the trout fishing it may be possible, but subject to availability, to arrange for a boat with ghillie on Loch Maree, famous for its Sea Trout and Salmon fishing. This would however be in addition to the rent. Salmon and Sea Trout fishing can also be arranged on the River Torridon which given a good spate can be really quite productive. Very good boat fishing with a ghillie can be arranged on Loch Damh for Salmon and Sea Trout and the Loch is also known for its large Brown Trout.

There is good sea fishing to be had locally and boats can be hired at both Shieldaig and Gairloch, approximately 30 minutes away, the latter of which has good sandy beaches.

There are plenty of places of interest to visit in the vicinity, amongst which are the famous Inverewe Gardens at Poolewe.

Stalking

From late August The Heights Cottage is also let with stalking for one rifle out each day. The Stalking is amongst some of the finest West Coast deer forests in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. The stalking takes place on The Heights beat, formerly part of the Kinlochewe Estate and comprises some 20,000 acres with the highest ground Slioch at 3260 ft above sea level. The views down Loch Maree from the stalking ground are magnificent, embracing not only the Loch with its shores clad with ancient Caledonian Pinewoods, but also views to the Torridon Hills.

The stalking is carried out in the traditional manner and Garron ponies are used for

taking beasts off the hill. Approximately 30 stags are shot each year.

It is the policy of the Estate not to shoot trophy heads, in order to improve the quality

of the stags, and only those pointed out by the stalker may be shot.

Heads may be purchased from the Estate by arrangement.
