A distinctive Tower House set in an elevated position which sits in approximately 5 acres with views over Loch Carron towards the Applecross peninsula.

Ravenscraig Tower is a modern tower house, designed and built by the highly-respected Scottish architect Ian Begg for his own use and completed in 1992. The property offers more than 3,700 sq. ft. of light-filled accommodation arranged over five floors, with a layout and style reminiscent of old castles and tower houses yet incorporating the amenities of modern living including concrete block walls, modern sash windows and underfloor heating.

The ground floor accommodation comprises a triple aspect conservatory with access into the kitchen which in turn leads into the large dining room which has a fireplace with multi-fuel stove and a bay with built-in seating. There is also a boiler room, cloakroom/utility room and a cellar which has a variety of uses.

A door from the dining room opens to the tower with cloakroom and traditionally-designed turning staircase rising to the first floor, which is dedicated to an extensive sitting room, reminiscent of a Great Hall with open fireplace, window seating, useful en suite cloakroom and a feature ceiling modelled on the triangular panelled ceiling in the Bedroom of the Five Queens, one of whom was Mary Queen of Scots, at Chenonceau in France.

A smaller circular stair with open newel, inspired by the 17th century secondary stair in the Borromini church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontana in Rome, rises from the tower to the upper floors, which house a large principal bedroom with a corner fireplace, a private wooden balcony overlooking Loch Carron, built-in storage and a modern en suite bathroom, three further bedrooms together with a family bathroom, a cloakroom and a studio/playroom.

This property has 5 acres of land.

Outside

The property is approached over a sweeping gravelled driveway flanked by sloping paddocks leading to private parking for multiple vehicles. The mature garden features areas of lawn interspersed with mature trees and a hedged garden with small pond, areas of light woodland, a paved terrace off the conservatory and a projecting Italianate loggia-style terrace, both ideal for entertaining and al fresco dining, the whole enjoying stunning views over the loch and surrounding countryside towards the Applecross peninsula and its mountain range. The property also benefits from a large 40 ft. shed, accessible over a separate driveway.

Situation

The property is set on the shores of Loch Carron sea loch, the point at which the River Carron enters the North Atlantic ocean and which separates the Lochalsh and Applecross peninsulas, on the west coast of Ross and Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands. Nearby Plockton village enjoys a temperate climate as a result of the Gulf Stream and features cabbage palm trees giving a sub-tropical appearance, a Thomas Telford-designed church house, village hall, general store with café, public houses, restaurants, a newsagent and craft shop, small hotels, a library and primary and secondary schooling together with a sailing club, coral beaches on the shore of the loch and a small airstrip for use by private light aircraft. Known as the Gateway to Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh village is located on the Lochalsh peninsula opposite the village of Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, accessible over the Skye Bridge which has a harbour and marina.

The Highland capital of Inverness lies approximately 70 miles to the east and benefits from an airport opening up travel to several UK cities and to Europe. Communications links are excellent: the nearby A890 links to Inverness, and Duncraig station offers regular services to Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness with its onward links to major regional centres.

Directions

From Inverness turn off the A890 at Achmore towards Plockton. Approximately 2.5 miles from Achmore there is long layby on the left where you fork left up the hill past the garage to reach Ravenscraig Tower.
