Hansel is located in a beautiful and peaceful hamlet in the heart of the much sought after South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the towns of Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, and just two miles from the coast.
Dartmouth, 5 ½ miles away, is an historic town, with wonderful boating facilities, fine shops, restaurants, cafes and art galleries. There are a number of lovely beaches in the South Hams and excellent golf courses at Dartmouth and Churston. Dartmouth has excellent facilities for sailing, with the Dartmouth Royal Regatta being a highlight of the racing calendar. For the more ambitious yachtsman, there are deep water moorings, three marinas and a number of boat yards.
The historic, market town of Totnes, approximately 13 miles away, was nominated in the British Airways HighLife magazine as one of the world's top ten funky towns. The town has a medieval castle, direct access to the River Dart and offers an eclectic range of shops, including an organic vegetable shop, a specialist record store, an exceptionally well-stocked book shop and many other interesting independent shops. There is a street market twice a week and a monthly food market. There are good private and state schools, as well as the Steiner School in the local area at Totnes, with the surrounding villages having excellent primary schools.
Communication links are excellent with the A38 Devon expressway and the M5 motorway at Exeter. There are regular inter-city rail services from both Exeter (London Paddington 2 hours) and Totnes (London Paddington 2 and ¾ hours). Exeter International Airport provides an ever increasing number of domestic and international flights, including two flights a day to London City Airport.
From Exeter, take the A38 for Plymouth. Take the exit for Totnes and the A384. Once in Totnes turn right onto the A381 (Kingsbridge). Go through the villages of Harbertonford and Halwell. At the BP garage at Halwell follow the road round to the right, towards Kingsbridge. One mile after the BP garage turn left for Slapton and East Allington. After 4 miles, at Buckland Cross turn left, signposted to Gara Mill and take the first right. After approximately 500 yards and at the T-junction, continue straight ahead, marked Farms only on the junction sign. Follow it for about 1 ½ miles and Hansel Barn is found on the left hand side.
