Built in 1898 by Frederick William Mortimer, tailor to the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. Shillingford Court sits on the site of an old Wharf on the banks of the river Thames. It is said that due to the closeness of then Edward and Mortimer, over the years the Prince visited the house with his mistress, Lillie Langtry. When the house was constructed Mortimer had both his initials (FWM) and his wifes (JDM) inscribed in the front door hinge, drain hoppers and the grand staircase. The house was subsequently split into its current form. Tailors is the largest dwelling within Shillingford Court, and has elegant, interesting rooms featuring ornate panelling and high ceilings typical of the era.
The house is entered through a large entrance hall with a solid oak front door, Italian mosaic flooring and an adjacent cloakroom. The reception hall has a magnificent and imposing sweeping staircase to the upper floors with panelled walls and high ceilings. The drawing room is a stunning triple reception room with a large fireplace, wood burning stove, dining area and sitting areas. There are deep bay windows with stone mullions to the front and rear giving stunning views over the river and meadows beyond. The River side bay has a large window seat giving the perfect place to take in the views. A galley kitchen accessed via the drawing room and the hall is fitted with built in hob, oven, microwave and dishwasher.
The extraordinary Edwardian staircase leads up to a galleried landing with the sitting area and beautiful views over the river Thames. Our clients have added a first floor kitchen/breakfast room with an electric 3-oven Aga, this lovely room is dual aspect and the breakfast/dining area has wonderful views over the river. The master bedroom has an en suite shower room and large dressing room with fitted wardrobes (this has separate access to the landing and could be used as a bedroom). There is a charming first floor bathroom with Italian mosaic floor and a separate WC. On this level there is also a large utility cupboard with washing machine and dryer. To the second floor there are three further bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, further bathroom and study/bedroom with views over the Thames.
The property is accessed from Court Drive via large wrought iron gates opening to a shared gravel driveway which leads to designated parking. Further to this the property has access to a cellar/workshop at the front of the property.
The garden to the rear has wonderful views of the River Thames and surrounding countryside. A large stone terrace is accessed via steps from the reception hall and provides the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful setting. The property further benefits for a mooring area with 63 feet of River frontage.
