Historic Napoleonic Grade II Listed Martello Tower, converted into a striking private residence
History Formerly a Martello Tower dating back to 1810, The Q Tower was an important element in the defence of the south-east coast against the threat of invasion from the continent during the Napoleonic War. 103 Towers were originally built across Britain, of which 29 exist along the East Coast to defend the entrance to Harwich Harbour. Although never used in combat, latterly in WW2 The Q Tower was fitted with a spot light and used to relay messages in case there was an invasion along the Eastern Coast. To date many of the Martello Towers have been converted into museums, private residential homes and at times used for military exercises or remain derelict. The Q Tower has been described by English Heritage as having one of the most well maintained and complete Moat Walls and is Grade II Listed. The Q Tower obtained its name as those along the East Coast were designated a letter of the alphabet.
The Property The Q Tower is a historic private residence positioned in an elevated position within Felixstowe and enjoying unrivalled panoramic views along the coastline and out to sea. The Q Tower is one of Felixstowes five remaining Martello Towers which has been converted into a striking private residence. The successful conversion carried out in 1947 has resulted in versatile accommodation which retains many historical features. The Q Tower is half way up South Hill, after the bend, on the left.
