The historic town of Petworth, with the National Trust owned Petworth House and Park, lies about 4 miles to the south west, whilst the larger centres of Horsham and Chichester are about 12 miles and 18.5 miles respectively. Horsham and nearby Billingshurst both have mainline rail services to London.

The area is noted for its beautiful countryside, over which there are many miles of walks and cycle paths, including Bedham Common. The South Downs National Park is also nearby. Sporting and recreational facilities in the area include golf at the nearby Foxbridge Golf Club, Wildwood (Alfold) and the West Sussex Golf Club near Pulborough; polo at Cowdray Park, racing at Fontwell and Goodwood and sailing at Chichester Harbour.
