The Haven is an iconic 1920's house in one of Newbury's most prestigious and leafy residential no-through roads. The house is the epitomy of art deco style and was designed by the renowned architect Thomas Tait who was also responsible for many important buildings of the era including Unilever House in London and the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The house sits in comfortable grounds of just under an acre and provides flexible accomodation including a versatile studio annexe. The main house is focused around a large open entertaining and living space flooded with natural light overlooking an ornamental rectangular canal in the garden beyond. The house is dominated by clean lines, large windows and a contemporary modern finish, with a nod to the art-deco period which is so evident from the classic distinctive architecture. The house has been reconfigured internally in recent years into a stylish and sophisticated family home updated for modern living. The kitchen is of a modern industrial design complementing the sleek lines of the house. In addition to the stylish open plan area there is a garden room, and also a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, adding to the versatility of the living accommodation. There are several bedroom suites, three with balconies overlooking the manicured grounds below. The annexe is well appointed and laid out to provide studio living accommodation, and could be used as a more integral part of the main house in the style of a large party/entertaining room.
The Haven is approached via a gravel 'In and Out' carriage driveway and there is plenty of parking space and a double garage with an electric door. The formal gardens to the rear of the property are screened by original mature yew hedges planted in the 1920's when the house was built. The focus of the design is centred around the canal shaped pool, with specimen trees and year-round interest provided by shrubs and herbaceous perennial planting. In addition to the formal area there are two lawns, a small orchard, and shrubberies providing an enticing green backdrop.
The Haven is situated in Tydehams which is a very sought-after area of Newbury, close to the town centre but in a secluded residential setting. Newbury offers a wide range of shopping and leisure facilities including a great choice of restaurants, pubs and shops in the market place and the new Parkway shopping area, and larger supermarkets including Waitrose on the edge of the town. There is a choice of leisure activities on offer with Newbury racecourse and several golf courses nearby. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside offering wonderful walking and riding opportunities, and all the advantages of the surrounding rural outdoor space combined with accessibility to larger towns and fast transport links. The A34 and M4 are a short drive away and there are fast train services from Newbury into London Paddington. There is a wide choice of excellent schools in the area including Cheam, Elstree, Downe House, Bradfield College, St Gabriel's, Falkland Primary School and St Bartholomew's Secondary School.
Tydehams is situated on the south side of Newbury. From the town centre take the A343 (Andover Road) in a southerly direction. Pass the turnings to The Brambles and Heyward Gardens on the left, and the turning to Tydehams is the next turning on the left, shortly before you reach Wash Common. Continue into Tydehams and the entrance to The Haven will be found after a short distance on the right hand side marked by a curved white painted wall.Read all
