Cycle friendly workplaces increasingly important to office workers

Q3 2016

As the capital celebrated National Cycle to Work day this week research from Strutt & Parker identified that a lack of secure storage space and changing facilities are preventing a number of London’s office workers from donning their fluorescent vests and cycling to work.

As part of their Office Futures: Workshift research Strutt & Parker surveyed 1,000 London office workers to ascertain the importance of workplace facilities on the decision to cycle to work and 38% of respondents believed that their workplace isn’t cycle friendly. 25% of respondents said that if their office boasted better bike parking and shower facilities they would be more encouraged to cycle to work.

Stephanie McMahon, head of research at Strutt & Parker said: “Undoubtedly the development of super-cycle highways around London is having a big impact on the number of people cycling to work, but unfortunately a number of businesses within the capital are not able to offer the appropriate facilities to meet this demand. For occupiers seeking new office space bike storage and changing facilities are often a key part of their requirements as attracting and retaining the best talent increasingly relies on providing an office environment that offers unrivalled connectivity, but older stock is often lacking these provisions.

“Winning the ‘war for talent’, particularly with regards to Millennial workers will increasingly require businesses to adapt their offices, in terms of configuration, technology, location and facilities.
