The Prince's Countryside Fund is a unique collaboration of brands and businesses working together to support the people who look after the countryside in the UK.
The Fund, which was created by HRH Prince of Wales and launched in 2010, has been set up to help improve the sustainability of British farming and rural communities, targeting the areas of greatest need. It will achieve this by reconnecting consumers with countryside issues and supporting farming and rural crisis charities through a dedicated funding stream.
Funding is given out twice a year and so far the Fund has donated a total of £1.1 million. The money that is raised is channelled into a range of projects with a track record of success in supporting British farming and the rural economy. Decisions on where the money is spent are made by the Fund's independent trustees.
The latest pot of £422,000 will go to Prism City Farming who are aiming to train 60 unemployed people in horticulture, the Pembrokeshire Beekeepers' Association, The Peak Districts upland farmers, "Open Farm Weekends" in Northern Ireland and the Plunkett Foundation among others. All the winning projects have shown a special contribution to safeguarding the countryside at either national or a more local level.
Mark McAndrew from Strutt & Parker's estate and farm agency division believes: "The Fund will provide vital support to the 5.5 million people who rely on rural industries for employment. Farmers are being squeezed by price wars in the supermarkets and rising contribution costs and anything that can ease pressure on them is a huge bonus for the British countryside."
Each participating company has made a donation to the Fund and provided in-kind support to help bring it to life. Businesses that are donating money to the Fund are displaying The Prince's Countryside Fund logo on their products, websites, and in their stores.
