Highclere Castle – home to the fictional Downton Abbey - is synonymous with history and grandeur, but during the festive season it transforms into something truly magical.

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Lady Carnarvon to talk about how she brings Christmas to Highclere so beautifully, and to hopefully inspire you to create your own seasonal magic at home this year.

How does Christmas come to life at Highclere Castle?

Christmas at Highclere Castle is my favourite time of the year. Months of planning go into it every year and the results are always spectacular, with hundreds of metres of garlands and sixty Christmas trees decorating the interiors and exteriors. This year, we have our grandest tree yet: a magnificent 26-foot marvel standing proudly in the Saloon as the centrepiece of our festivities.

What is the first thing guests notice when they arrive for the festive season?

The approach to the castle is utterly magical, with Christmas trees lighting the main drive and forming a sparkling pathway to Highclere’s grand entrance. The combination of natural beauty and warm lights creates a moment that is designed to set the tone for the celebrations.

Do you draw inspiration from any period or style when decorating for the season?

Our inspiration evolves each year and often draws from Highclere’s rich history or unique heritage. Last year, for instance, we embraced an Egyptian theme to honour the castle’s connection to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

This year, we’ve chosen the theme of the Three Wise Men. The library, drawing room, and smoking room each reflect elements of their journey and gifts, weaving a narrative throughout the castle.

How do you approach decorating such an iconic property to ensure it feels festive but still in keeping with its history?Highclere Christmas Tree.jpg

We start thinking about Christmas as early as January, ensuring we have time to design a cohesive theme and source the right decorations. Everything is considered with Highclere’s architecture and heritage in mind, from colour palettes to textures.

By the time November arrives, the team are ready to transform the castle. The decorations are handled by myself and Sally who runs the gift shop, along with her team of four. Putting up the 26-foot tree involves everyone in the castle – around 30 people – working together to carefully rope it up and secure it in place. This year’s tree is so tall that we even had to add some of the baubles while the tree was lying down! This is all part of the fun and experience, and the result is wonderfully festive but feels respectful to the property’s historic beauty. You can watch the assembly of the tree here.

What would you advise for someone getting their home ready for Christmas?

The key is meticulous planning. Start early by thinking about your theme, colour palette, and decorations to ensure everything comes together seamlessly. Consider how your home’s existing style can complement your festive design, creating a cohesive and welcoming atmosphere.

For a sense of timeless elegance, focus on details like garlands to highlight staircases or mantelpieces, and warm lighting to create an inviting glow. A statement Christmas tree can serve as a striking focal point, and decorations inspired by history or meaningful themes can add depth and charm to your festive display.

What does a perfect Christmas at Highclere look like to you?

For me, the perfect Christmas at Highclere is about bringing joy to our visitors and seeing the castle come alive with festive cheer. This year, everything feels particularly special, and guests are having a wonderful time.

On Christmas Day, the celebrations are more private as my husband, and I host a private family gathering. Our talented chefs prepare a traditional Christmas lunch, which we enjoy together in the castle, followed by a walk around the estate. It’s a day of spending time together, made more special by the beauty of Highclere at this time of year.
