As many might argue that internet shopping has increased in the past year due to the pandemic, it may be assumed that the high street is something of the past. However, our research tells a different story. Strutt & Parker’s latest Housing Futures survey asked homebuyers about their wants and needs for a new home, with 76% of respondents claiming that access to shops and amenities was an important motivation.
This could be partially due to how lockdown shone a spotlight on the importance of having a range of shops and amenities on the doorstep and people wanted to support local businesses. But also without the need to commute in the same Monday to Friday patterns, workers have spent more time at home and therefore in their local area. As such, local high streets have flourished where some city centres might have been quieter, simply because workers weren’t travelling in to town as much.
In addition to being able to shop for groceries locally, access to local restaurants, bars and pubs can also be a motivating factor. Living close to a café or a neighbourhood restaurant can provide ample opportunities to get involved in the local social scene, connect with neighbours and be involved with events.
