Take 5… The Suburban Home

Suburbsheader.InSPire

With the events of the past 12 months shining an unprecedented light on the way we live in our homes, many living in more urban areas came to the conclusion that they needed more space to live, both inside and out. And for those in search of larger homes with bigger gardens, but who still wanted to be within reach of the city, many might have looked towards the suburbs for their dream home.

It is thought that the origin of the suburb can be traced back to the industrialisation of city centres in the 18th Century when members of the middle classes wanted to escape increasingly crowded and polluted urban areas by purchasing homes on the outskirts of the city in search of a quieter life. This trend of escaping city life and the subsequent development of the suburbs was accelerated in London by the building of the Metropolitan Railway in the 1860s which created transport links for commuting back into town. In the 20th Century, suburbanisation was influenced by Ebenezer Howard and his wife social reformer Henrietta Barnett who created some of the first garden suburbs and led the model housing development movement.

Skipping forward to today, people living in the suburbs are still able to the benefits that stem from the ideas around their initial development. Homes here are normally larger in size, have bigger gardens and are generally more private. And when it comes to the cost to buy, homes in the suburbs frequently offer better value for money when comparing similar homes in more urban areas.
