The second instalment of Disney’s adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper’s Rivals comes to our screens this week, promising further romance, drama, and ‘Rutshire’ based escapades. The two television production companies, Corinium and Venturer, battle it out to win the franchise for the South West, against a backdrop of rolling countryside and picture-perfect period houses.

To mark the occasion, we’ve selected a few homes currently on the market that could play a starring role in Rivals – from an equestrian property with polo fields, to a Palladian manor house – these homes could easily host Pimms-fuelled drinks parties in the garden, gossip fuelled dinners, or even allow landing a helicopter on a well-manicured lawn.

Ladyswood House

Malmesbury, Wiltshire

This Edwardian country house is built of Cotswold stone, with warm red brick and lime render. Extensively renovated by the current owners, the house embodies grandeur, soaring ceiling heights and is geared towards entertaining. Outside it’s all about the horses – facilities include a polo yard, riding arena, polo arena, and stable complex.

Ombersley Court

Ombersley, Worcestershire

Set within just under 50 acres of gardens and parkland, Ombersley Court is a Grade I Listed Georgian country house, the former seat of Lord Sandys. This historic house is perfect for hosting guests; with generous Billiards room, 12 ornately decorated bedrooms, and plenty of space to land a helicopter if that’s your preferred mode of transport.

Mere Down House

Mere, Wiltshire

Mere Down House dates from the 1920s, although was essentially almost completely rebuilt in more recent years. However, the house exudes the period charm and frivolity that would make it a brilliant ‘Rutshire’ location. The gardens to the south are divided into four ‘rooms’ to create interest, while there’s also a swimming pool secluded behind stone walls providing the perfect setting for an impressive garden party. Inside the house has been beautifully decorated with a sense of elegance as well as comfort, including spaces to curl up with a book or even hunker down to write your own novel.

Triscombe House

Taunton, Somerset

Pretty in pink and commanding in the surrounding landscape, Triscombe House sits in the Quantocks Hills and dates from 1902. Comprehensively restored and saved from ruin in the early 2000s, this West Country home carries all the hallmarks of a Rivals-worthy home. Sprawling gardens with manicured lawns could easily double up as a helipad, while inside the Winter Garden looks as if it was made to play host to a wonderful party. There’s even a fully equipped brewery within the grounds if exploring the Quantocks on horseback or tending the formal and kitchen gardens isn’t for you.

Burton Hill House

Malmesbury, Wiltshire

Grade II Listed and of architectural significance, Burton Hill House is a blend of modern day living with historic refinement. While the extensive gardens and grounds are impressive, inside there’s plenty to occupy your interest. Fourteen bedrooms provide space for family, guests and staff, there’s an impressive drawing room, two kitchens, a library, games room, studies and even a pool and leisure complex housed in the former chapel. The elegant cinema room with red velvet chairs is the cherry on top, and would surely be the perfect place for a television producer to review their work.
