Take five | Hauntingly beautiful homes

30th October 2026

From historic castles and gothic mansions to a former sanatorium with a fascinating past, discover five homes with a wonderfully mysterious charm.

Spooky season has arrived, bringing with it an appreciation for the unusual, the mysterious and the wonderfully atmospheric. From imposing Gothic mansions and centuries-old castles to secluded country estates with intriguing pasts, some homes seem to have stories of their own to tell.

Whether it’s a former sanatorium, a historic castle complete with its own hidden staircases, or a grand country house with a history stretching back hundreds of years, each has something that sets it apart.

We’ve found five extraordinary properties where history and atmosphere go hand in hand.

Northorpe Hall, Northorpe, Lincolnshire

With its striking Norman Revival architecture, castellated features and intricate Gothic interiors, Northorpe Hall feels as though it has been plucked from the pages of a Gothic novel. Set within 6.5 acres of private grounds, the estate also holds the ruins of a 16th-century hall, a reminder its story started long before the main house.

Quantock Lodge, Aley, Somerset

Quantock Lodge comes with a rather unusual past. This 19th-century Gothic Revival mansion was once a summer residence before becoming the Quantock Sanatorium, which remained open until 1961. Set within almost 20 acres of grounds, its history gives the estate an especially atmospheric place in this collection.

Bonaly Tower, Edinburgh, Midlothian

Tucked away at the foot of the Pentland Hills, Bonaly Tower is a Scots Neo-Baronial castle complete with conical turrets and castellated stonework. Our favourite part is the former library, with towering sash windows,  patterned ceilings, tapestry and an imposing stone inglenook fireplace – a room that feels made for stories from another era.

Allardice Castle, Inverbervie, Montrose

Dating back to around 1542, Allardice Castle has all the makings of a classic Scottish stronghold. Once the seat of the ancient Barons of Allardice, this secluded castle retains its original spiral staircases, vaulted entrance hall and impressive Great Hall, complete with a large open fireplace.

Bishop's Court, Exeter, Devon

With origins stretching back to the medieval period, Bishop's Court has a history steeped in religious significance. Once the official palace of the Bishops of Exeter, the magnificent Grade I listed estate retains a beautiful private chapel, complete with vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows.
