Eco-friendly trends 2018

Q1 2018

Eco-friendly houses are growing in popularity across the UK, but we’ve come a long way from solar panels and energy saving lightbulbs in a bid to go greener.

From growing veggies in your kitchen to your own personal wind turbine, we take a look at what’s in store for eco-friendly developments in 2018.

Waterfall sinks with sensors

Even your sink can help the environment, if you buy a smart one. Not wanting to compromise on style, designers Jiaqing Zhang, Chen Gao, Xin Ai and Liye Zhang sought to create a stylish spout that produces an attractive and clever waterfall style flow.

As well as looking futuristic, it acts like it too. The sink comes equipped with sensors that can detect the size of the object you are washing and dispenses a bespoke amount of water for it, so waste is limited.

Veggie-growing kitchen appliances

Growing your own fruit and veggies means they’ll be organic and free from packaging - decreasing your carbon footprint, so it’s no surprise it’s a popular choice for the eco-conscious homeowner. But some fruits and vegetables can only be grown at certain times of the year if you live in an area of four seasons. The ‘Homefarm’ Home Hydroponic Garden is here to change that - it enables year-round production by automatically operating to ensure your produce is growing as optimally as possible. It’s easily installed in any modern kitchen so expect to see them very soon.

Solar panel security cameras

The problem with most wireless tech is that it requires a battery, which needs replacing – not very eco-friendly. However, the Solar Cam comes equipped with panels to absorb sunlight during the day, to keep it charged all night.

As well as it’s convenient charging capabilities, it detects abnormal heat and movement activity and reports it all direct to your smartphone in real-time, so you can be aware of what’s going on at home, even when you’re out.

With this kind of security and control, we expect to see the Solar Cam making a big impact on housing security in 2018.

Self-cleaning green fish tanks

Fish are a favourite amongst busy working professionals due to their low maintenance nature. But fish tanks can become unclean very quickly and can be harmful to the fish, as well as being unsightly.

With the futuristic ‘Water Garden’, you won’t have to worry about that again. This self-contained biome where fish and plants work together, creates an ecosystem that does all the work for you. It uses plants to keep the water in the tank clean, so the water never needs replacing, plus - herbs and sprouts will grow from the fish waste.

Personal wind turbines

A super green way to charge your electronics is with the Waterlily Micro Turbine – a gadget that turns wind power into energy to charge anything from your mobile phone to your GoPro camera.

The device comes with a 12 foot charging cable and two USB ports, perfect for hanging outside on a windy day. If the weather isn’t in your favour, you can spin it manually to generate energy for your electricals.

This is just the start, sustainable energy is becoming accessible to everyone and it won’t be long before bigger versions are available to power your whole home.
