Government announces changes to Permitted Development Rights

Q3 2020

This week’s announcements from the government are some of the most significant changes we have seen to use class order since its introduction.

Commercial, retail and service uses are now grouped within a use class presenting new opportunities for change of use of buildings between these purposes. Additionally there are new provisions for local community retail and new permitted development rights for demolition and rebuild of buildings in B1 business uses to provide apartments and new homes. There are of course a number of caveats and requirements and the BNP Paribas & Strutt & Parker planning team is on hand to advice further on implications and opportunities.
