Summer of sports not slowing down the market

Q2 2012

The property market isn't being affected by sports tournaments

The property market isn't being affected by sports tournaments

With the world's best-loved tennis tournament, Wimbledon, getting under way this week, there's no doubt that many people will be dusting off their rackets. This, coupled with the recent excitement over the England football team's Euro 2012 campaign, means you would expect the property market to be affected. Strutt & Parker reports that this is not the case.

Although the actual number of new applicants has decreased slightly this week, viewing numbers for current vendors have stayed remarkably strong. Strutt & Parker can report that the viewings were considerably up on the previous week, indicating that the large amount of sport on television has not deterred people from going out and looking for a new home.

Michael Fiddes, Head of Agency comments: "The popularity of sports in this country is so great that you almost expect everything else to be put on hold when tournaments are in full swing. With recent international cricket, the football Euros and now Wimbledon starting, it is testament to the current housing market that viewing figures have been encouraging".

Despite the indifferent weather, Wimbledon starting always signifies that the summer is well and truly underway. There is a certain optimism and British spirit that this time of year brings and this can translate into transactions within the market.

Realistic pricing from sellers and a sense of positivity among buyers post Diamond Jubilee celebrations has combined to ensure that the strong start to 2012 looks set to continue well into the year.

Fiddes adds "The strawberries are out and the Champagne is flowing. The feel good factor that is associated with summer can often persuade people who are undecided to get up, get on with things and step up their search for a new home."
