Reasons to move to Alton

Alton is most famous for its connection to Jane Austen, and when you arrive it’s easy to see how this stunning part of the world inspired one of England’s most important literary figures.

However, the historic Hampshire town doesn’t dine off its connection to the Sense and Sensibility author, nor is it a wonderful place to live solely because of its impressive and storied past: it is modern and thriving in all the best ways. Every Tuesday there’s a well-attended market, where local merchants sell everything from clothes to fresh local produce. For more regular needs, there are clothes stores, supermarkets, and everything in between.

Jane Austen’s house in nearby Chawton is a major attraction, but Alton is also home to the stunning Church of St Lawrence, which dates back to the 11th century. Those more partial to outdoor pursuits have the joys of the Hampshire countryside to enjoy, which is packed full of great walks like the zig-zag pathway.

Housing stock in Alton varies, with smaller, more intimate options available in the centre of the town. However, the outskirts and satellite villages have plenty of space, whether it’s for larger, more modern family homes, or charming cottages and bungalows on acres of green land.

There aren’t many reasons to leave Alton, but if you do need to, it’s not a long drive to Winchester or Guildford, the two closest large towns. You can also be on the outskirts of London within an hour by car, or in the centre in just over 60 minutes if you get the train. Public transport in Alton is limited to one train station or some local buses, but during the day there are regular services. Drivers will be happy to know local roads are well maintained.
