Situated a short distance east of Fettercairn on the north side of the public road. Balbegno Castle is a 1560s L-plan Baronial-style castle with the addition of a Georgian wing during the 18th Century. Set in its own parkland with views to the south, it is approached by a drive which leads round a sweeping bend. The original part of Balbegno consists of three storeys with a re-entrant tower in the outside angle of the L-shape. Lime rendered with stone dressings, the main roof is slated with crow-stepped gables. The Georgian wing is matched in height at three storeys and has a corbelled parapet decorated with head medallions and angle rounds. A single storey Venetian-style porch occupies the space between the reentrant angle and the 18th Century wing.

The castle has been refurbished in recent years and imaginatively redecorated throughout. The resulting contemporary style of the interior contrasts attractively with the traditional exterior architecture.

The internal accommodation is arranged across two principal floors and includes six bedrooms and three reception rooms – including the Great Hall – as shown on the floor plans. In recent years, the castle has been let as holiday accommodation and used as a base for guns to meet and have lunch on shoot days.

Surrounding the castle is an extensive garden including a croquet lawn, beds of roses and other plants and shrubs, and several ornamental trees. Beyond the garden lies parkland which provides a buffer between the castle and the public road. The parkland contains a mature mix of trees including beech, ash and horse chestnut. A feature is the existence within the park of a 17th Century ‘doocot’.

The Hollies Cottage is tucked away behind Balbegno Castle on the northwest side and is reached by a separate drive. It is a three-bedroom traditional cottage that faces south.

Behind the cottage is an attractive range of stone buildings comprising the former stables and coach house, which are used for general storage.

This property has 20 acres of land.
