An outstanding Grade II listed 16th Century country house set in stunning grounds
Recorded as dating back to the sixteenth century or earlier, with later Georgian additions Wickham Hall offers the elegant and beautifully proportioned accommodation that you would expect from a country home of this period. The Georgian South West facing front elevation is partially clad in wisteria with a charming terrace providing a link between the gardens to either side.
Internally the house has undergone extensive refurbishment by the present owners to provide outstanding contemporary accommodation arranged over three floors, whilst still retaining much of its original charm and character. A central T shaped entrance hall, part of which is vaulted, has a flagstone floor and can be accessed either from the door to the front or one at the side aspect. Four reception rooms provide light and spacious accommodation, plus a study, and of particular note is the bespoke fitted kitchen with central island and doorway opening through to a fully fitted utility room with ground floor cloakroom and boot room. Immediately off the kitchen is the snug/ fifth reception room with log burning stove and separate staircase leading to the first floor, which was once part of the cottage but has now been amalgamated into the property. Double opening doors lead from the snug to the garden room which has full length windows and doors to both aspects providing extensive views over the garden to the South West and swimming pool to the rear, and a lantern window to the roof which floods the room with natural light. The garden room opens into a family room which has a log burning stove and access to a wine cellar, whilst a separate lobby from the garden room leads to a ground floor wc and fitted changing room.
A spacious first floor landing has a seating area to the front aspect whilst the master bedroom suite occupies the entire left wing and comprises a fully tiled bathroom with bespoke cabinetry finished in marble, and a fitted dressing area. Two further bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms are located off the landing whilst a dressing room off bedroom three has access to a fourth bedroom and bathroom originally part of the cottage.
Stairs from the landing lead to the second floor where a landing area provides access to four further bedrooms, two bathrooms and a utility room. All of the bedrooms are amply supplied with wardrobe cabinets
This property has 5 acres of land.
The principal feature of Wickham Hall is the formal moated grounds and a paddock. To the south west the shingle drive provides parking for several cars and a flagstone path lies adjacent to an expanse of lawn with wrought iron fencing. The grounds to the north east have been sympathetically designed as three distinct areas. The first of these is the well manicured lawn with a folly located to one corner and a bridge crossing the adjoining moat. To the right mature hedging separates the principle lawn from the second garden area which resembles a meadow and again which slopes towards the moat on its furthest boundary. To the left of the principal lawn is a stone wall which acts as a screen from the part covered garden terrace, which is accessed from the garden room, and within which seats the heated swimming pool. Traversing the bridge across the moat leads to a path which splits left and leads to a well stocked garden area to the rear of the swimming pool, whilst proceeding right leads to the enclosed tennis court. An embankment lies adjacent to the garden path at the crest of which are a number of mature trees providing seclusion and privacy. Beyond the trees lies the paddock which has been post and railed fenced. The outbuilding lies to the South West and is divided into five stable blocks.
Wickham Hall is surrounded by open countryside; thus offering some delightful views, but is also located within a mile of the amenities at the village centre including the Church of St Bartholomews, village hall, library, general store with Post Office, doctors surgery and two Public Houses. There is also a sports field with a cricket club, football teams and tennis courts.
The town of Witham is just 3 miles to the west offering a greater range of shops including supermarkets, together with its railway station providing a regular service to London Liverpool Street with an approximate journey time of 45 minutes.
The county town of Chelmsford is just 9 miles to the south west providing a full and comprehensive range of commercial, shopping and entertainment amenities.
This area, at the heart of Essex, is well placed for numerous leisure activities including a number of golf clubs in the area, together with the River Blackwater to the east catering for a broad range of walking, bird watching and sailing pursuits. The area is also particularly well served for all levels of education; both private and state.
From Witham proceed south on the B1018 Maldon Road passing under the A12 and after about 1¾ miles turn right into Langford Road and after approximately 200 yards the property can be found on the left hand side.Read all
