Rowney Priory was a small religious Abbey for Benedictine Nuns founded in or around 1164.

The Priory ceased to have any religious status at the dissolution of the monasteries in 1535, during the reign of Henry VIII. Subsequently the site went into private ownership and for several centuries it was a farmhouse. Thereafter several notable people such as the Irish Composer Sir Michael William Balfe (best known for his Opera The Bohemian Girl) resided here between 1864 - 1874. In 1882 it was purchased by Mr J H Dugdale who commenced significant change and by the turn of the 20th century the building and gardens as we see them today had been created.

Directions From London leave the M25 at Jtn 25 and head north for approximately 12miles along the A10 Great Cambridge Road, leaving the A10 at the junction after the A602 Stevenage turning signposted A1170 Ware. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit past Hanbury Manor Hotel and head north through the villages of Thundridge, Wadesmill & High Cross. Once through High Cross take a left turn at signpost for Standon Green End and Whitehill Golf Centre and follow the road for 1 mile then take the left turn onto Lowgate Lane a public byway (follow sign for Lowgate Farm). After 400 yards the Woodland Drive entrance for Rowney Priory is on your right. Arriving from all other directions aim for the A10 Great Cambridge Road, Hertford. Head north on the A10 and follow the instructions from A1170 Ware junction.
