Take 5: homes in the best coastal villages

Living by the water is high on many of our wish lists – whether you’re dreaming of a slower pace of living, waking up to waterside views, or being able to enjoy outdoor activities more easily.
In our recent Best Villages blog, our agents shared some of their favourite coastal villages from around the UK. Here, we’ve dived into five waterside homes for sale that could give you the chance to call one of these villages home - from an art-deco villa once owned by Ian Fleming, to a postcard-perfect thatched cottage.

Mermaid Cottage
St Margaret’s Bay, Kent
This Art Deco home may have an impressive historical legacy, having been home to both Noël Coward and Ian Fleming, but its setting is equally impressive. It’s one of just a handful of properties on the seafront at St Margaret’s Bay. Said to be the closest home to France, the uninterrupted coastal views here don’t get much better. Whether you’re basking in the sunshine in the house’s curated gardens overlooking the water, or cosying up watching a storm pass from the sitting room with its oversized windows.

Rock Cottage
Cockwood, Devon
This Grade II Listed home sits in a prime waterside position in the village of Cockwood. Dating to the 19th century, the house has been sensitively modernised whilst retaining its period features, including original fireplaces, large sash windows, and intricate cornicing. There’s a one-bedroom detached annexe which offers income potential too.

Chapel Cottage
Bosham, West Sussex
Found in Bosham, within the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this chocolate-box cottage is just as charming as its surroundings. Period features provide plenty of character - from its exposed timber beams to the original fireplace - while the home itself is just a short stroll from the harbour, sailing club, and two much-loved local pubs.

Rose Cottage
Bosham, West Sussex
Also found in the village of Bosham, Rose Cottage is just as picturesque as Chapel Cottage. Just metres from the harbour, the home has a part-weatherboarded and brick façade, as well as a pretty bay window. If the harbour on this cottage’s doorstep isn’t enough, the home has a private garden, as well as the village green just around the corner.

Highdown
Cockwood, Devon
Set back off the waterfront, you’ll find Highdown – a four-bedroom period home full of original details and plenty of potential. The house has far-reaching views over the Exe Estuary but is wonderfully private, thanks to its elevated position, private driveaway, and position set back off Vicarage Road. Whilst the ground floor was extended in the early 2000s, there’s still scope to develop and extend further, subject to the necessary consents.
