Reasons to move to Shaftesbury

Picturesque, well connected, and full of things to do, it’s no surprise that Shaftesbury is one of Dorset’s most desirable towns.

Despite its small size, Shaftesbury has a rich cultural scene. Inhabited since the Saxon times, its famous Abbey is home to the grave of St Edward the Martyr, the teenage king of England whose relics became a major pilgrimage site. The town centre is full of ancient architecture too, while also having modern conveniences like major supermarkets.

Surrounded by rolling hills and charming wooded areas, like Thomas Hardy’s beloved Blackmore Vale, Shaftesbury is an excellent spot for nature lovers. And, best of all, if you do gear yourself up for a hike there is no shortage of country pubs to stop at on the way.

It’s not just walks and views to enjoy, though. The tight-knit local community puts on a number of brilliant events throughout the year, including arts festivals and weekly markets where local artisans can sell their wares. The heart of the town is Swans Yard, a community hub in the centre of Shaftesbury named after an old coaching inn. Home to a gallery, independent local shops, and a plethora of events, there’s always something going on.

While Shaftesbury doesn’t have a train station, it’s well connected by A roads. Bath is only a short drive away, as is the seaside city of Bournemouth, so it’s not hard to spend some time in the bustle of a bigger settlement, or take advantage of certain benefits that only cities can offer, before heading back to the serenity of small town life.

Whether it’s the charming old homes that line the cobblestone streets in town, or the newer countryside cottages and farmhouses that can be found a little outside the centre, the housing in Shaftesbury tends to be larger, and aimed at families or retirees looking for space. So, if you’re looking for a big garden and plenty of rooms to spread into, then there are few places better to live.

If the area sounds perfect for you, our team of estate agents specialising in Shaftesbury are here to help.
