Reasons to move to Stockbridge
The tiny town of Stockbridge seems like the definition of quaint on first glance, yet when you look a little deeper, you’ll find there are endless excellent reasons to move here.
Lying on the River Test (literally on – the chalk stream runs underneath the main roads in Stockbridge, and sometimes you can spot trout where it pops up above ground), the town has a long and storied past. The scenic high street was once known mostly for the droves of sheep that were being moved from Wales and through the town, something alluded to by the ancient Welsh sign still affixed to Drovers House. Nowadays, you can follow a trail of 10 poems set etched in glass, inscribed onto metal plaques, or set in stone while walking around the charming centre.
There are a huge number of independent restaurants, tea rooms, pubs, and shops in the town, especially when you consider its small population. The historic larger town of Winchester is also nearby, meaning modern needs like supermarkets are easily accessible by car or a regular bus. This also means that you can reach central London in just 90 minutes, or Southampton in less than an hour, using just public transport. With that said, a car is helpful in making the most of Stockbridge living.
If you prefer the great outdoors to old buildings, then Stockbridge has you covered. Cranbourne Chase National Landscape and the New Forest are a short drive away, and the countryside that immediately surrounds the small town is full of wonderful walks and opportunities like climbing and bouldering, as well as water sports.
Housing stock in Stockbridge is beautiful and mostly made up of older family homes and large cottages. There is a good mix of older professionals, young families, and retirees in the town, and a great community spirit with plenty of local events throughout the year.
