The quintessential English town, Godalming is a wonderful blend of ancient and modern. Surrounded by charming countryside, yet well linked to the capital and other major cities in the south like Portsmouth and Bristol, this Surrey settlement is the ideal spot if you want to blend convenience and a small-town feel.

The town centre is known for its centuries-old buildings and other architectural gems. Nowadays, it’s home to artisan stores and high-end coffee shops, as well as a number of excellent and diverse eating options. There are also plenty of bigger retail options nearby, and the population centre of Guildford is just a short drive, bus, or train away. If you prefer your own two feet to four wheels, it’s easy to find excellent hiking paths and sweeping country views in the area surrounding the town’s boundaries.

Because of its long history there’s plenty of cultural touchstones dotted around Godalming. The small town has ties to a number of iconic people and moments from British history, like its Titanic wireless operator Jack Phillips, whose actions saved a number of lives, and these are honoured in the local museum.

Housing in Godalming varies but there are lots of family homes, as well as apartments for those who are willing to sacrifice space for proximity to the centre. If you’re really looking for a slice of country living, then nearby villages like Chiddingfold and Hindhead are great options, full of cute cottages surrounded by greenery and farmhouses with plenty of space for a young family to grow.

The road network around Godalming is well-maintained, and for those who like to bike there are plenty of great cycling routes around the town (perfect for both pleasure and commuting). There are also a number of great schools in the catchment area that Godalming falls under, one of the reasons it’s so attractive to those with children.
