The beautiful settlement lies at the southernmost tip of delightful Devon, sitting on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary. Blending rugged coastal views and rolling green countryside, Salcombe really is idyllic – there is a reason it’s a well-established and popular resort town, after all.
Those with a penchant for active pursuits will find no end of ways to pass the time in Salcombe. The waterside location means easy access to world-class watersport facilities, and the nearby Dartmoor National Park is perfect for activities like hiking and bouldering.
If you’re more of a lounger, you’re in luck too: there are a number of excellent beaches nearby, like South Sands and Bigbury-on-Sea, as well as Burgh Island, which is only accessible via sea tractor when it’s high tide. The town is also home to some great attractions, including an intriguing Maritime Museum.
Salcombe has everything you could need from a practical perspective too, whether that’s large supermarkets for the weekly shop, or a skilled tailor to mend and alter clothing. The local food and drink scene is also top notch, with fresh seafood widely available, and local Salcombe ice cream is a luxurious treat.
The public transport situation in Salcombe is reflective of its size and location, meaning there are few options (except the ferry, which regularly crosses Salcombe Harbour). However, with a car you have plenty of options, and traffic is minimal here thanks to the slower pace of life.
Salcombe is a wonderful place to raise a family, or to see out your post-work years in a charming, relaxing location. Housing stock reflects this, with most options being geared towards those with children, or those looking to find a retirement community. With that said, there are lots of smaller options that cater for the seasonal staff who fill the town during summer, when it buzzes with life.
