Joined by its principal tributary, the Little Water of Fleet beside the ancient oak wood of Castramon (a Scottish Wildlife Trust nature reserve), the Water of Fleet continues its largely woodland-clad course through an agricultural landscape of improving quality to the village of Gatehouse-of-Fleet where it meets its tidal waters. From here it passes an 18th Century harbour (Port Macadam) and then drains into the Irish Sea via Fleet and Wigtown Bays.

Directions

Travel directions: As you reach Gatehouse of Fleet, continue northeast on Laurieston Road until you reach a fork in the road. Bear left at the fork, which is the southern point of the estate, known as Low Barley, and continue on this road for approximately three miles. You will pass through Castramon Wood before taking a left and continue into the heart of the estate for a further mile. You will pass over the Little Water of Fleet, before taking the next left and continuing on this road until you arrive at Murrayton Farmhouse.
