A historic A Listed Castle dating from the sixteenth century
A wonderful castle with comfortable liveable accommodation including spectacular Great Hall (dining room), drawing room and retaining a wealth of original features. The castle lies about 2 miles north west of the Royal Burgh of Inverbervie in a private and peaceful setting above a bend in the Bervie Water. The castle is remarkable and unusual for its intricate label mouldings supporting the turreted spiral staircases. The property offers elegant reception rooms, coach house with potential, walled garden and about 3 acres.
Allardice Castle was the chief seat of the Barons of Allardice, an ancient family who first appeared in an 1197 charter. The castle dates from around 1542 with many alterations and changes made over the years. Particularly important were the changes likely made at the end of the 19th Century which transformed the castle from a cold fortified tower house into a comfortable usable family home. Allardice Castle may be viewed as one of a chain of coastal castles, with Dunnottar, Fetteresso, Cowie and Muchalls Castles to the north. Allardice Castle was bought by the current owners in the 1970’s and over the last 50 years they have undertaken an extensive but sympathetic restoration and upgrading of the castle to form the stunning property it is today.
Allardice Castle is built of harled stone under a slate roof, the three-storey L-shaped building enjoys an elevated setting with views out over the surrounding countryside. The castle ground floor includes a large kitchen/living room with huge original fireplace with wood burner and pantry off, utility room, shower room, vaulted entrance hall and home office. A beautiful spiral staircase rises to the first floor to an impressive Great Hall with a large open fireplace, drawing room and library. There are two bedrooms on the first floor and a shower room. The spiral staircase rises to the second floor with principal bedroom with dressing room, guest bedroom and bathroom. A further staircase leads to two additional bedrooms, one of which features an exquisite painted ceiling documenting the history of the castle. A final spiral staircase leads to the watch tower chamber.
The main rooms retain a wealth of features including cornice work, doors, fireplaces and panelling and the castle feels very liveable. Outside, on the other side of the pend is a large, vaulted storeroom suitable for a number of uses.
It is rare to find a castle such as this, still very much in its original form and unspoilt, yet with bright welcoming rooms.
Outside The gardens and grounds included with Allardice Castle are beautiful and offer a fine private setting to the house. Extending to about 3 acres the castle is approached via a secluded driveway which leads to the property and an inner courtyard with ample parking in the front of the castle. The south facing courtyard leads to a formal walled garden flanked by two large yew trees providing shelter and privacy with well-maintained lawns to the side and rear.
The grounds lead down to the Bervie Water on two sides and the castle benefits from riparian fishing rights.
Outbuildings Located above Allardice Castle is a coach house which offers storage. Subject to planning the coach house could be developed into a variety of uses. There are three other stone built stores within the grounds.
