Rare Lutyens-designed Spanish-style lodge in prime Englefield Green Setting
Set within one of Englefield Green’s most prestigious addresses, North Lodge is a rare and architecturally significant home designed by Sir Robert Lutyens for Bentley chairman Captain Woolf Barnato. Showcasing a Spanish-influenced style, the property combines striking period character with a beautifully considered contemporary interior, offering a unique opportunity to acquire a home of genuine architectural distinction. Originally conceived as part of the Ridgemead estate, North Lodge forms part of an exceptional group of gate lodges created in the late 1920s. Its distinctive white-rendered elevations, louvred shutters and elegant stone entrance detailing reflect a rare interpretation of the Spanish Colonial style—unusual within Lutyens’ body of work and seldom found in the UK. The house has been thoughtfully enhanced to create a light-filled and highly liveable home, where period character and modern comfort sit seamlessly together. The principal reception rooms are beautifully proportioned, with the drawing room opening directly onto the garden, creating a natural flow for both everyday living and entertaining. At the heart of the house, the kitchen/breakfast room provides a sociable and contemporary space, with wide glazed doors opening onto the terrace and garden beyond, reinforcing the strong connection between inside and out. The first floor provides well-balanced accommodation, including a principal bedroom with its own private balcony and en suite, alongside three further bedrooms and a family bathroom.
Outside
The gardens have been carefully designed to create a series of distinct outdoor spaces, from formal terraces ideal for entertaining to quieter, more secluded areas beneath mature trees. Thoughtful planting and structured landscaping provide year-round interest, while the addition of a garden room with hot tub offers a relaxed retreat.
