Reasons to move to Taunton
When you stand in the shadow of the 12th century Taunton Castle, built on the foundations of a monastery that had stood there 300 years prior, you can practically feel the history that runs through this Suffolk town.
Taunton isn’t just historically significant. It’s the current county town of Suffolk, which means it’s home to intellectual gems like the Somerset Museum and a centre for arts and culture. It’s also full of everything you need for day-to-day living, whether that’s amenities like supermarkets and other places to purchase the basics, a thriving hospitality and food scene to ensure you can enjoy some quality time with loved ones, and quirky local boutiques to buy handcrafted items and clothing.
Sat on the banks of the River Tone, locals can engage in charming walks along the waterway. The historic St Magdalene Church is a marvel of Gothic-style architecture, and there’s also the wonderfully manicured Hestercombe Gardens to take in. There’s a strong sense of local community too, with events and festivals throughout the year.
Those who like their pursuits to be a little more rural will be blown away by everything the Somerset countryside has to offer, and be thankful for how well placed Taunton is to explore it all. Highlights include the rugged Quantock Hills and the more tranquil Somerset Levels.
Taunton is well connected by local buses and rail, as well as road. You can get into Paddington in under two hours via a scenic direct train, while Bristol is just 30 minutes away by rail.
The central parts of Taunton are more built up, so housing tends to be closer together. You can still have plenty of space, and gardens are common, but if you’re looking for a place with a more rural feel, then areas like Cheddon Fitzpaine and Henlade will be ideal. They offer more privacy and room, while also being just a few minutes away from the bustle of Bridge Street. You can go from tiny country lanes to watching a match at Somerset County Cricket Club in less than 10 minutes!
