Reasons to move to Bury St Edmunds
The charming Bury St Edmunds is tucked away in the glorious West Suffolk countryside, but this is far from a sleepy place where little happens.
Named after the former East Anglian king and first patron saint of England, King Edmund, this town is said to be home to his final resting place. There are plenty of tangible historical treasures in and around the town, too, from its ancient abbey to the UK’s only remaining Regency playhouse.
Despite its relatively compact size, Bury St Edmunds is a bit of a foodie paradise. Local restaurants deliver high quality meals, and there are a number of highly rated fine dining establishments. Don’t worry, though: there are also plenty of spots serving more traditional, hearty food. This is especially true of the pubs, of which the town has a fair few thanks to its long-standing ties to the brewers and pub company Greene King.
The town is big enough to have many large supermarkets to choose from, as well as other high street chains with well-stocked stores. That’s not to say there’s no local merchants: there are plenty of independent businesses that give the town a unique character, selling everything from cookware to clothing.
The nearby countryside is easy to escape to via car or even bus, and there are endless beautiful trails and pathways to explore. It’s not just rural delights you can find out there, though, with great attractions like West Stow Anglo-Saxon village nearby.
The local train station means quick access to Cambridge and connections to the rest of the UK, and London can be reached in under two hours by public transport, or just over an hour by car. Bury St Edmunds is also well connected by road, and there are lots of established bus routes to help you get around if you don’t have a vehicle.
Housing in the town centre and surrounding area varies, with small flats, two-up two-down terraced houses, and large, detached family homes. In areas that are on the outer reaches of Bury St Edmunds, like Nowton and Horringer, there is more of a countryside feel, with farmhouses and cottages.
